Powerlunch Production and The Indie Mind joined forces to produce a video series for eHow about Margaritas recipes.
Yes, the same ‘ol Margarita cocktail but also other exotic drinks with different Tequilas and a variety of other liquors and mixers.
The mixologist was Brian McCullough from The Standard Poor in Dallas, TX.
Before talking about the margaritas I want to mention that this amazing bar features one of the best brunch options in town, and the menu for this brunch special is different than the other typical brunches in Dallas, and just that, makes it stand out in a big way. Not only that but The Standard Poor also offers over 65 different cocktails and all its bartenders have a lot of experience that no matter what drink you want, just ask for it and they will make it happen.
Ok, so going back to the margarita video recipes. Since today is 5 de mayo, it’s the perfect day to learn about how to make the perfect classic margarita or even a non-alcoholic margarita, please find below all the videos. And have fun! Oh yes, very important, please remember to not drink and drive!

Creating how to videos and learning about aquariums in this video production gig in Dallas, TX

Last month I had the opportunity to work with Elizabeth Hong from Powerlunch Production in a series of videos for eHow.com and I must have to say that it was a lot of fun!
We spent about 6 hours with Paul Endtricht at The Fish Gallery in Dallas, TX and we were learning so much about aquariums and the best practices for maintenance and DIY tips.
I always enjoy creating how to videos and video tutorials, in the past, producing videos for Bolt Productions about how to use some film and photography equipment; creating elearning courses for defensive driving and music curriculums; video tutorials about make up for Tyra Banks Type F among others… This time it was about aquariums and taking care of those amazing marine creatures. I love animals so it was a yes when proposed to do the camera and edition for this video series produced by Powerlunch Production.
If you have an aquarium or want to learn more about it, here are some of the videos:

The new world of VOD and hybrid distribution

When making a film it’s very easy to get lost in the creative process… However creators and specially indie filmmakers should be aware that the distribution and marketing process of a film starts in pre-production.

Indie producers are always in the hunt of new ways to profit from their films with the minimum third party involvement, this is because distributors most of the times are looking to take a bigger piece of the pie than the filmmaker. Sad but true. Distributors often used to ask for all rights in all territories, meaning that you were putting all your eggs in the same basket… Usually getting your eggs forgotten and without been exploited at their fully potential.

With the internet, filmmakers have now the access to self-distribute their film on a VOD basis, in a straight forward connection with their audience, not to mention the sales of the dvd on a one-to-one basis. This sounds very exciting, however there are two factors to consider when thinking about approaching this way. One is marketing and the other one is Broadcast opportunities.

Let’s talk about marketing.

Big budget films always dedicate millions to the marketing area, exciting trailers, tv commercials, magazine ads, online ads, etc… There are always ways to involve the brand (film) with marketing strategies to create awareness in the community, indie filmmakers usually don’t have the budget for these type of campaigns and are constantly lacking the financial support that the big studios have.

To market a film yourself, means to use all strategies available for the filmmaker or producer to create film/brand awareness. Facebook, Twitter, Digg, LinkedInd and other social media might be helpful but to engage audience means to give to the audience. When you give important information or perks, you get a loyal audience. When you get a loyal audience, you get people that will talk well about your film. Asking for “likes” on your page is like the popular kid in high school asking for votes… Nobody likes that. It’s like poking someone’s shoulder and asking to see their ID.  Anyways. The best thing to do is to invest your time unless you have the budget to hire a Promotions and Marketing professional to work for you. Beside your time use most of the resources you can: your friends, your family, your web knowledge, etc… I also found some good books that discuss this topic in Google. Look for Guerilla Marketing for filmmakers, some good books are:

- Selling Your Film without Selling your Soul

- How to Make, Market and Sell your Film without the Middleman

- Shameless Self-Promotion

- Short Film Distribution

These ar ejust some books that can give you more light about this topic.

Now let’s move on to the second aspect I find against you while doing VOD distribution… At this point, if your film is on PAID VOD services, you are in a better position than when your film is on subscription based platforms, like NETFLIX for example. Here I’m talking about broadcasting opportunities. TV channels always want to have the exclusive, so if your film is on internet VOD, a cable VOD deal is more difficult to get. If your film is on any territory already been distributed, then is more difficult to give your exclusive rights to show your film. In this area today, TV channels have more leverage since they’re looking for exclusive deals to present your film to their audience. I’m not saying is impossible, bute surely more difficult to get these type of deals.

Now, if you ask me what would be a good way to distribute the film once is done. I would say, try to target the main broadcasters first, hit film festivals that have a good film market, avoid distribution deals that ask for EXCLUSIVE WORLDWIDE RIGHTS unless they’re giving you a good sum of money upfront for your film. And if for any reason you end up with an offer for foreign distribution, go for an upfront fee to this distributor instead of deferred payment since is more difficult for you to control the sales of your film in other countries.

In regards to VOD?

Self distributing via your site could be very profitable if you market yourself well. So start creating audience even before starting production for your film…. Believe me it’s worth it.

Well, those are some random thoughts on this blog post. Feel free to comment!

Mercury Undercover will hit Best Buy, Barnes and Nobles and more stores!

After the great success we had with Dr. Mercola featuring our film for 5 days for free, we are now in the stage of DVD sales with major retailers. Passion River Films, our DVD distributor is getting ready to launch the film on Best Buy, Target, Barnes and Nobles and many other retailers. After finishing the film on October 28th 2011, we’ve been working very hard to create awareness in the community about amalgam fillings and its dangers. Being now so close to release the film Mercury Undercover on DVD in this major retailers is a huge step for a film made with our own resources, swimming against the current and making a film possible with our own efforts. We are proud of it. It’s like the little baby graduating from kindergarten. And now this baby will be available for a great price to buy online or at the store through Walmart, Barnes and Nobles, Best Buy, Target, and over 100 different stores across the country.

Now, on the other hand I want to take a moment to spread the word about another film about this issue that is now in production, called “You put what in my mouth?” this film focuses on the consequences of mercury in practitioners mainly in the dental profession and its patients, unfortunately the amount of exposure is so high that a lot of times these practitioners and patients end up suffering all the consequences of degenerative diseases and end up paying with their lives… Such is the case for example of Virginia Pritchett and Kathairein Magdalena as seen on the movie “Mercury Undercover”:

Kathairein’s Dilema from Powerlunch Production on Vimeo.

Where is the action to take by governments that give priority to money and corporations than to give priority to the health of its citizens… Sadly, we live in a world where money rules the goals of many minds, letting the spirit starve in the poor feelings of abandonment and greed.

I strongly recommend to watch the film of our friends at http://www.facebook.com/Youputwhatinmymouth to learn some more about this issue.
